Europe’s largest dairy producer launches “GM-free” TV commercials
Germany’s new law allowing the use of “without biotechnology” (Ohne Gentechnik) labeling for food products has facilitated a major advertising campaign for Campina, Europe’s largest dairy producer. Starting with its Landliebe brand website, Campina is educating consumers about the food chain that leads to the grocery store shelf.
A commercial on the Landliebe website features dairy farmers talking about the authentic and traditional feed plants used for their cows’ feed rations. The Campina concept avoids any soy ingredient in the compound feed; the cows eat primarily feed that has been cultivated in Germany traditionally: grass, rapeseed, or lupine. This way not even the risk of GMO contamination from soy can arise.
Most dairy farmers in Germany use soy in their dairy cattle feeding programs. Many of the smaller producers have been able to remain non-GMO by using certified non-GMO soy from Brazil and India.
With Campina taking the lead, other producers are likely to follow, either by adopting the newly-authorized labeling for their non-GMO products, or by making a few adjustments in their procuring systems to become eligible for the new labels.
